Abstract
A detailed synthesis is described for ternary complexes of copper(II) alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids with 1,10-phenanthroline. Elem entary analysis, IR spectra and thermal analysis show the ternary comp lexes as CuL(2)(phen) . H2O, where L = CH2 = CHCOO- and CH2 = C(CH3)CO O-. The molecular structure of Cu(C4H5O2)(2)(phen) . H2O was determine d by single crystal X-ray diffraction, the result of which shows that the complex is mononuclear with distorted square pyramidal coordinatio n from two monodentate-carboxylates, a bidentate, 1,10-phenanthroline and one aquo ligands. The crystal is mono-clinic with space group P2(1 )/n and unit cell parameters are: a=0.732 nm, b=1.794 8 nm, c=1.601 4 nm, beta=97.12(2), Z=4.
