Abstract
The null-reference instrument landing system (ILS) uses a horizontally polarized antenna on a tower to produce an elevation angle null which forms the VHF glide slope signal used in instrument approaches to a r unway. Under certain combinations of snow and earth wetness, there is a severe reduction in the amplitude of the ground reflected signal com ponent. This can severely degrade the glide slope null and thus the IL S system.
