M. Gehmeyr, ON NONLINEAR RADIAL OSCILLATIONS IN CONVECTIVE RR LYRAE STARS .3. A FULL-AMPLITUDE INVESTIGATION OF THE RED EDGE, The Astrophysical journal, 412(1), 1993, pp. 341-350
An adaptive-grid algorithm is employed to construct a sequence of conv
ective RR Lyrae envelopes with varying effective temperatures. For the
first time, the theoretical red edge is derived and analyzed from ful
l-amplitude models. ''Convective quenching'' is confirmed as the mecha
nism that stalls the pulsational driving when the red edge is approach
ed from within the instability strip. It is demonstrated that the theo
retical properties of this approach are qualitatively consistent with
the empirical properties. A quantitative comparison, however, depends
strongly on details of the convection model.
