We study phase synchronization in a chain of weakly coupled chaotic os
cillators. In the synchronous state, the phases of oscillators are loc
ked, while the amplitudes remain chaotic. We demonstrate that the coex
istence of several clusters of mutually synchronized elements and glob
al synchronization of all oscillators is possible. Two mechanisms of t
he transition to global synchronization are shown. The dynamics of spa
tiotemporal defects is discussed for the cases of phase-coherent and f
unnel Rossler oscillators.
