Ta. Zawodzinski et al., A COMPARATIVE-STUDY OF WATER-UPTAKE BY AND TRANSPORT THROUGH IONOMERIC FUEL-CELL MEMBRANES, Journal of the Electrochemical Society, 140(7), 1993, pp. 1981-1985
Water uptake and transport parameters measured at 30-degrees-C for sev
eral available perfluorosulfonic acid membranes are compared. The wate
r sorption characteristics, diffusion coefficient of water, electroosm
otic drag, and protonic conductivity were determined for Nafion(R) 117
, Membrane C, and Dow XUS 13204.10 developmental fuel cell membrane. T
he diffusion coefficient and conductivity of each of these membranes w
ere determined as functions of membrane water content. Experimental de
termination of transport parameters, enables us to compare membranes w
ithout the skewing effects of extensive features such as membrane thic
kness which contributes in a nonlinear fashion to performance in polym
er electrolyte fuel cells.
