Abstract
Hardness test results are given for natural diamond single crystals an d polycrystalline BN of 0.5 and 5 mum grain size under static (4 N s-1 ) and dynamic (30 MN s-1) deformation in the temperature range 20-1200 -degrees-C. A variation in the hardness with temperature, loading rate and grain size is shown. Possible mechanisms of indentation of single crystals and polycrystals are studied.
