Tg. Wegmann et al., BIDIRECTIONAL CYTOKINE INTERACTIONS IN THE MATERNAL-FETAL RELATIONSHIP - IS SUCCESSFUL PREGNANCY A TH2 PHENOMENON, Immunology today, 14(7), 1993, pp. 353-356
Pregnant females are susceptible to intracellular pathogens and are bi
ased towards humoral rather than cell-mediated immunity. Since T(H)1 c
ytokines compromise pregnancy and T(H)2 cytokines are produced at the
maternal-fetal interface, we hypothesize that these T(H)2 cytokines in
hibit T(H)1 responses, improving fetal survival but impairing response
s against some pathogens.
