Among the various intellectual projects which derived from Max Weber's
collaboration on the Outline of Economics was a sociology of the stat
e. Unlike other specialized sub-sociologies, however, no preliminary w
ork can be found on the project, at least not under this title. The re
ason is that, when preparing the first version of his Outline contribu
tion, Weber still did not have a clear concept of the state, instead w
eavering between a Tonnies-oriented conception and another one based o
n Jellinek. This hesitation allowed the sociology of the state to rema
in largely subsumed within the sociology of domination. Only in his se
cond version did Weber arrive at a clearer position, one which led him
to distinguish the sociology of the state more sharply from the socio
logy of domination.
