L. Zoldag et al., POSSIBILITIES TO CEASE THE PUERPERAL LACT ATION AND THAT CAUSED BY PSEUDOPREGNANCY IN THE DOG, Magyar allatorvosok lapja, 48(6), 1993, pp. 360-364
,,BRK-Werfft-Chemie'' A. U. V. tablets, containing bromocriptine mesyl
ate, were used in 98 female dogs with different ages with the indicati
on of pseudopregnancy and in 11 cases to cease the puerperal (postpart
al) lactation. The preparation was applicated orally during 5 days in
a dose of 0.02 mg/kg of body-weight. The animals were examined at the
beginning of the therapy (1st examination), at the end of the therapy
(2nd examination) and 5 to 7 days later, on the 12th to 14th day (3rd
examination). Attention of the owners was called up to give simultaneo
usly a water and carbohydrate poor diet. Expressed mammary swelling ob
served in 69 cases (70.4%) at the beginning of the treatments was obse
rved only in 7 animals (7.1%) at the end of the treatments. Milk secre
tion found in 81 cases (82.6%) was observed only in 5 bitches (5.1%) a
t that time. Change of behaviour, frequently observed in case of pseud
opregnancy, was observed in 58 animals (59.2%) and only in 5 individua
ls (5.1%) at the end of treatments (Table 1). Expressed mammary swelli
ng observed in all the 11 bitches treated to cease the puerperal (post
partal) lactation was only observed in 2 animals (18.2%) at the end of
treatments. As a side-effect, vomiting was observed in 16 bitches wit
h pseudopregnancy (16.3%) after the first treatment and in 3 animals (
27.3%) during the ablactation treatment.
