Mathematical models were developed to predict design and operational c
onditions needed to implement oxide-coated media as a treatment proces
s for soluble manganese removal. Two separate models were developed to
predict the continuous removal of soluble manganese in the presence o
f free chlorine (continuous regeneration model). and the eventual brea
kthrough of soluble manganese without oxidant addition (intermittent r
egeneration model). Each model was derived from chemical reaction, mas
s balance, or isotherm equations and was further developed by a sensit
ivity analysis and parameter estimation. Model verification involved r
eview of independent research studies regarding soluble manganese remo
val.
