Formed coke, electrode-grade graphite (E.G.) and electrode-grade carbo
n (E.C.) were modified by infiltrating carbon within the pores by use
of methane cracking. The rate of oxidation with CO2 was lowered for al
l these samples but the amount of reduction was dependent on pore stru
ctures. Decrease in the rate for the electrode-grade carbon was very l
arge compared to other samples. The mechanism of enhancement of resist
ance against oxidation was explained in terms of the pore structure ch
anges accompanying infiltration and oxidation.
