Abstract
It is shown that plasma compressibility leads to development of the te aring instability for a reconnecting current sheet in the long-wave re gion in which for an incompressible plasma the instability is absent. Longitudinal magnetic field plays the role of a trigger in such proces s of destabilization which is of principal importance for physics of f lares and other non-steady phenomena in the solar atmosphera.
