Long-term follow-up evaluation of biofiltration treatment in 7 patient
s is presented. These patients experienced frequent episodes of hypote
nsion during acetate hemodialysis. A 3-year biofiltration treatment re
duced by 43% episodes of symptomatic hypotension and produced a signif
icant increase in the pretreatment pH and plasma bicarbonate levels. T
he beta2-Microglobulin level was significantly reduced during biofiltr
ation therapy. The mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures slightl
y increased during biofiltration. Uremic polyneuropathy, as demonstrat
ed by an increase in motor nerve conduction velocity, slightly improve
d. The patients reported increased comfort during biofiltration therap
y.
