Thermodynamic properties of allyl-alpha-cyanacrylate and poly(allyl-al
pha-cyanacrylate) were studied using high-precision adiabatic and isot
hermal calorimetry. The following characteristics of the compounds und
er investigation were obtained: temperature dependences of heat capaci
ties of the monomer, in the temperature range 14 - 330 K, and of the p
olymer, in the temperature range 5 - 430 K; thermodynamic parameters o
f melting of the monomer; parameters of the glass transition and glass
y state of the polymer; and heats of fusion of the monomer and of the
polymer. Based on the obtained data, we calculated the thermodynamic f
unctions of the compounds under investigation: enthalpy H-0(T) - H-0(0
), entropy S0(T), and Gibbs free energy G0(T) - H-0(0) in the temperat
ure ranges 0 - 330 K and 0 - 430 K for the monomer and the polymer, re
spectively. Also, at T = 298.15 K and p = 101.325 kPa, we calculated t
he combustion enthalpies DELTAH(c)0 and thermochemical parameters of f
ormation: formation enthalpy DELTAH(f)0, formation entropy DELTAS(f)0,
and the change in the Gibbs free energy at formation DELTAG(f)0. The
results obtained were used to calculate the enthalpy, entropy, and Gib
bs free energy of bulk polymerization of allyl-alpha-cyanacrylate in t
he temperature range 0 - 430 K. The upper temperature limit of the pol
ymerization process was determined.
