Deformation produced during the erosion of 316 stainless steel specime
ns by the impact of SiC particles is studied by X-ray diffraction. Ero
sion studies are made, at different impact angles, on samples simultan
eously heated to different high temperatures. For the samples eroded a
t room temperature the deformation stacking fault probability values a
re found to be 5 x 10(-3) and 3 x 10(-3) for impact angles of 90-degre
es and 30-degrees respectively. Variation of deformation stacking faul
t probability is correlated with the changes in the hardness value.
