A retrospective study was carried out on 200 patients who underwent su
rgery between January 1989 and September 1991. The aim was to investig
ate the development of urinary retention following renal and ureteric
surgery. The incidence of urinary retention was 55% for patients in th
e renal group and 26% for those in the ureteric group. In a control gr
oup of 100 patients undergoing cholecystectomy the incidence was 5%. T
he results showed that bladder function was inhibited greatly after re
nal surgery. Catheterisation in the pre-operative period may help to p
revent post-operative urinary retention.
