The effect of barium concentration on the structure and the normal and
superconducting state properties of Y1BaxCu3Oy compounds has been stu
died for 1.3 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 2.4. XRD pa
tterns reveal that superconductivity in all the compounds investigated
is due to the presence of YBa2Cu3O7-delta phase. As expected, single
Y1Ba2Cu3O7-delta phase was obtained only for x = 2.0. For x not-equal
2.0, additional compounds (impurity phases) like Y2BaCuO5, BaCuO2, BaC
O3 and CuO were observed. It has been found that the presence of these
impurity phases has a large effect on the normal state properties lik
e the resistivity, Hall coefficient and Hall mobility. The superconduc
ting parameters like onset transition temperature, T(co), transition w
idth, DELTA T, and final transition temperature, T(cf), are also affec
ted but only to a comparatively small extent.
