The interaction of oxygen and CO with the alkali Na was studied with c
ore level Photoemission using synchrotron radiation. We observed inten
sity increases in the Na2p core level by a factor of 1.5-2 for the sys
tems O2/Na/Ni(111), CO/Na/Ni(111), O2/Na/Cu(110) and O2/Na/Cu(111). Th
ese enhancements were more or less independent of substrate, coadsorba
te and alkali precoverage. We examine several models to explain these
observations.
