D. Hopkins et Ea. Shipton, A HYPERMETABOLIC REACTION DURING ANESTHESIA AND SURGERY - A CASE-REPORT, South African Journal of Surgery, 31(2), 1993, pp. 85-88
A young man underwent anaesthesia and surgery after multiple fractures
. After 2 hours of anaesthesia, the patient developed hypercapnia, aci
dosis, hyperpyrexia and mild muscle rigidity. He was treated for malig
nant hyperthermia. Muscle tension studies with caffeine-halothane and
muscle histology proved normal. The differential diagnosis of this abn
ormal metabolic response is briefly discussed.
