Capsidiol, a sesquiterpene phytoalexin produced by infected pepper, wa
s metabolized into three more polar products after incubation with rab
bit liver microsomes. One of these was identified as 13-hydroxycapsidi
ol by mass spectrometry analysis. In pepper leaves, capsidiol inhibite
d in a competitive manner trans-cinnamate-4-hydroxylase activity, a cy
tochrome P-450-dependent monooxygenase. The metabolism of capsidiol in
pepper leaves is discussed.
