Ml. Stevens et al., FROM PROTECTION TO INDEPENDENCE - UTILIZING INTERSECTOR COOPERATION TO ENSURE CONSUMER OPTIONS, The Journal of rehabilitation, 59(1), 1993, pp. 35-39
Integration of consumers with disabilities into the community requires
that they have options-for work, for services, and for recreation. Th
is paper describes how the staff of a small program developed working
relationships with employers and service agencies to transform service
s from sheltered to community-based employment. These relationships re
quired community members as well as staff to develop active roles in p
roviding opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The resultin
g change in services gave consumers a variety of choices regarding com
munity participation.
