The mechanism of the oxidation of a series of alcohols, ethers, ketone
s, and aliphatic alkylaromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of phenazi
ne N,N'-dioxide (PhNDO), as well as methanol and cyclohexane in the pr
esence of 2,5-dimethylpyrazine N,N'-dioxide, 2,3,5,6-tetramethylpyrazi
ne N,N'-dioxide, and 2,3-dimethyltetrahydroquinoxaline N,N'-dioxide ha
s been investigated by cyclic voltammetry on a glassy carbon electrode
in 0.2 N LiClO4 in acetonitrile. An overall two-electron mechanism fo
r the oxidation of each organic compound in a catalytic process within
the composition of a complex with the radical cation of the N,N'-diox
ide has been proposed.
