Analysis of the current response to a pulsed perturbation of the poten
tial under potentiostatic conditions makes it possible to investigate
the kinetics of the formation and displacement of ionic space charge i
n thin surface films (<20 nm) with high sensitivity with respect to th
e mass or Charge (10(-8) g/cm2 or 10(-5) C/cm2) and with good time res
olution (<10(-4) sec). The formation of mobile anions and cations in o
xide films of electrochemical valve metals has been considered as an e
xample.
