The use of a quartz crystal microbalance under ac conditions makes it
possible to determine the electrogravimetric transmittance. This metho
d has proved to be a very promising technique for in situ electrochemi
cal investigations. ne sensitivity of a quartz crystal microbalance on
the nanogram level permits the real-time observation of the variation
of the mass during the dissolution, precipitation, and formation of f
ilms. Simultaneous measurement of the electrochemical impedance and th
e electrogravimetric transmittance offers an effective tool for studyi
ng reaction mechanisms. The technique makes it possible to evaluate th
e atomic weight of adsorbed intermediates of multiple-step reactions o
r ions inserted into a film, as well as to separate the fluxes of anio
ns and cations entering or leaving a film.
