Total cadmium concentration in the samples of tap water, pond water, s
oil, tissues of control and metal exposed fish and aquaria water in ac
ute and chronic types of exposure was estimated in the present study.
Results show that 0.02 ppm concentration of cadmium in tap water sampl
es is below the toxic limit of cadmium concentration recommended by W.
H.O., while concentration exceeds the recommended upper limit in case
of pond water and sediment. Significant uptake of cadmium by fish and
fall in the concentration of cadmium concentration in the selected fis
h tissues was in the order kidney > gills > liver > muscles. Accumulat
ion in muscles was higher after 96 hr, 15 and 30 days of exposure, but
the values were lower than in other tissues. On the other hand, in li
ver cadmium accumulated significantly only after 60 and 120 days of ex
posure. An equilibrium was established between cadmium concentration i
n water and fish tissues after 60 and 120 days of exposure.
