Ellis Cosslett was one the first physicists to have enthusiasm for the
study of biological specimens by electron microscopy. Biologists from
many departments and institutes in Cambridge were encouraged to come
to the Cavendish Laboratory in the late 1940s and early 1950s to use t
he early Siemens microscope. In consequence the EM Section at the Cave
ndish became a fruitful meeting place and a number of the most importa
nt developments in specimen preparation techniques were made there. Su
bsequently, Ellis Cosslett provided similar encouragement to biologist
s during the development of the high voltage electron microscope.
