Abstract
The detection, imaging and characterisation of radial cracks, resultin g from Vickers indentations in a sintered reaction-bonded silicon nitr ide, are studied by means of ultrasonic leaky Rayleigh waves. The dept h of the cracks investigated varied between 40 and 270 mum. Focusing p robes with a nominal frequency of 30 and 75 MHz are used. The obtained C-scan images, which are complicated by the presence of the indents, are discussed. Crack length and crack depth are measured using acousti c methods. The detection and sizing limits are discussed.
