Abstract
The gene encoding the superoxide dismutase (SOD) of the thermophilic a rchaeon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius has been isolated and sequenced. Bot h the start site and the termination sites of the corresponding transc ript were mapped. The deduced amino acid sequence of the protein is ve ry similar to the sequence of mangenese- or iron-containing SODs. Phyl ogenetic sequence analysis corroborated the monophyletic nature of the archaeal domain.
