We modified and automated a conventional hematoxylin and eosin stain f
or formalin fixed, paraffin embedded rat carotid and pig coronary arte
ries. This method enhanced the staining of the elastic laminae in inju
red pig coronary and rat carotid arteries, and improved morphometric m
easurements of the media and neointima by computerized image analysis.
This modified hematoxylin and eosin stain can replace complicated ela
stic stains such as Verhoeff-Van Gieson or Movat pentachrome as a meth
od for routine staining of arteries for morphometric analysis.
