Abstract
The structures of both Sr8[AlO2]12.(SeO3)2 and its reduced product Sr8 [AlO2]12.(Se)2 have been determined using profile refinements of powde r neutron diffraction data. Both crystallize with the simple body cent ered cubic sodalite structure with strontium showing a tetrahedral coo rdination around SeO32-/Se2-, and selenite showing 24-fold disordering giving rise to a partially occupied distorted cuboctahedron comprisin g 24 identical deformed SeO3 trigonal pyramids. The infrared spectra o f aluminate sodalites as a function of cage dimensions are discussed.
