The purpose of the special issue is defined and two underlying assumpt
ions are outlined. The evolution of Industrial / Organizational psycho
logy in New Zealand, and some of the major developments during three p
eriods, from 1920 to 1940, from 1940 to 1960, and from 1960 to the pre
sent day, are summarised. Issues facing Industrial / Organizational ps
ychologists are outlined. An overview of the papers contained in this
special issue is presented.
