Laboratory abrasion and erosion tests have been carried out on permane
nt moulded austempered ductile iron (PMADI) castings and the results c
ompared with similar tests on sand cast austempered ductile iron. The
effect of variation in silicon content in the range 2.4-3.4% was studi
ed. Dry sand rubber wheel abrasion test results were used to judge abr
asion resistance and jet erosion tests were conducted at different imp
act angles to evaluate erosion resistance. PMADI castings have been sh
own to possess better abrasion and erosion resistance than the sand mo
ulded counterpart. Typical microstructural features observed in PMADI
castings and their implications on abrasion and erosion resistance hav
e been discussed.
