The object of this paper is an analysis of a new type of gas journal b
earing, which provides a very high static stiffness coefficient. As th
e load of bearings is very seldom constant, the response of the high s
tiffness bearing to the step force and its operation during a transien
t period are investigated. The pattern of the dynamic response of the
bearing to the step force enables an estimation of its stability. The
influence of some parameters of the bearing on the length of the trans
ient period are analysed. Operation under a programmed, time-dependent
unperiodic force, which is important for real applications of the bea
ring, is also investigated: promising shaft displacement characteristi
cs have been obtained. All the results have been calculated from numer
ical experiments.
