The activity level of the gamma-emitting radionuclides was measured in
the different component of Ismailia Canal (bottom sediment, biota and
water) by gamma-spectrometry. The average activity level of the dry s
amples ranged from 12 to 89 Bq/kg for the detected natural radionuclid
es. The annual external gamma-dose to the living organisms in the cana
l, close to the sediment beds, was found to be in the range of 1.21 +/
- 0.24 mSv/y and does not present any significant hazards when compare
d with the natural gamma-ray background around the Ismalia Canal (IC)
environment which ranges from 0.80 to 1.73 mSv/y.
