Abstract
A rational basis for the therapeutic and prophylactic use of antimicro bials is discussed. Different approaches are needed to deal with the i ndividual animal, group or herd disease problem. Improved antibiotic p reparations are needed to enhance the efficacy of treatment and minimi se suffering and lost production.
