The generally ephemeral adults of rhipiphorid beetles (subfamily Rhipi
phorinae) offer few chances to observe their courtship and mating beha
vior. A large population of Rhipiphorus luteipennis in a sand plain in
Oneida County, New York, during mid-August 1992 provided an opportuni
ty to observe several aspects of its sexual behavior, including precop
ulatory swarming by males.
