Abstract
Periodic oscillations in the mass spectra of large clusters often indi
cate the existence of geometric shell structure. There is, in fact a u
nique relation between the period of the oscillations and the geometry
of the cluster. Applying this rule to the data available for aluminum
clusters in the size range of 200-15 000 atoms shows that these clust
ers probably have an octahedral shape.
