Abstract
This paper proposes an algebraic approximation to the problem of gener ating appropriate classifications in a universe of discourse in which the characteristics of the elements are defined through attributes who se values are linguistic labels. Classifications are generated by mean s of operations between ordered strings induced by the fuzzy attribute s. Moreover, a heuristic measure is used, based on the concept of stat istical variance, in order to recognize the potential relevance of eac h attribute with respect to the generated classifications.
