A pulse-height analyzing system, designed to measure the 2.22 MeV gamm
a-ray circular polarization from the np --> dgamma reaction with polar
ized neutrons, is described. The system comprises a NaI(Tl) detector,
a photomultiplier, and a transversal filter. The system characteristic
s include a high value of throughput with counting losses of order 10%
in the photopeak region at a counting rate of 3.5 x 10(5) S-1 with 10
% resolution of the hydrogen photopeak. The distortions of the spectru
m can be described by a stochastic matrix. Elements of the matrix were
measured by response of the system to pulses from a precision pulse g
enerator (FWHM = 0.5%), which were added to the statistical events.
