Abstract
Homodyne light scattering was used to measure a component of the veloc ity difference deltav(l) on small length scales l in a vertical Taylor -Couette cell with a rotating inner cylinder. In addition, large-scale flow patterns were recorded photographically Both types of measuremen ts revealed the presence of rolls, out to very large Reynolds number R . The small-scale measurements of the mean value of deltav(l) exhibit a periodicity that appears near the onset of chaos. Various scaling pr operties of the flow were investigated.
