Bc. Mcgorum et al., EVALUATION OF UREA AND ALBUMIN AS ENDOGENOUS MARKERS OF DILUTION OF EQUINE BRONCHOALVEOLAR LAVAGE FLUID, Research in Veterinary Science, 55(1), 1993, pp. 52-56
The urea and albumen dilution techniques for standardising the variabl
e concentrations of pulmonary epithelial lining fluid (PELF) in bronch
oalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples were evaluated in horses. Both t
echniques proved satisfactory and were of equal accuracy. Albumen adju
sted BALF cell counts were significantly higher than PELF cell counts.
BALF from normal horses contained, on average, 0.4 per cent PELF (ran
ge 0.1 to 1.0 per cent), as determined by the urea dilution technique.
