Kairomones from body washings of host animals at close range induced a
rrestment, alighting and probing in male Glossina morsitans morsitans.
Some of these kairomones were effective up to 20 cm from their source
in a wind tunnel, indicating that they were perceived via olfactory r
eceptors. Further experiments indicated that the active compounds were
present in the ethyl acetate - insoluble, phenolic, acidic, neutral a
nd basic fractions of the methanolic extract of the cattle wash. The p
henolic fraction elicited the most probing behaviour.
