Abstract
An adaptive refinement procedure using a new automatic quadrilateral e lement mesh generator is presented. The performance of the adaptive pr ocedure in achieving a given accuracy with different mesh refinement s trategies is compared. It is found that when using bilinear or biquadr atic quadrilateral elements refinement strategies of both mesh enrichm ent and mesh regeneration can lead to a prescribed accuracy being achi eved by the Zienkiewicz-Zhu adaptive procedure1 with the optimal rate of convergence. However, fewer mesh refinement steps are needed if the strategy of mesh regeneration is employed with the newly developed au tomatic quadrilateral element mesh generator.2
