The structure of CO2 monolayers adsorbed onto MgO(100) single crystal
surfaces has been studied by LEED experiments within the 35-100 K temp
erature range. The surface was prepared by cleaving the crystal in sit
u under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The monolayer presents an ordered
commensurate structure (2 square-root 2 x square-root 2)R45-degrees.
We propose a unit cell containing two molecules and having two glide p
lanes.
