Abstract
It is necessary for the optimum design of molded case circuit breakers to analyze magnetic blowout fortes acting on the are in the contact s ystems when the circuit breakers interrupt fault currents, In this pap er, the forces generated by the are current and the flux density are o btained by using the 3-D finite element analysis taking into account t he current distribution in current paths and variations in are diamete r. It is shown that our 3-D analysis is capable of evaluating new desi gn of contact systems in molded case circuit breakers.
