This review discusses some unresolved problems in understanding the mo
lecular mechanism of the electrophoresis of DNA through gels, problems
that have come to light only recently. These include: the wide variet
y of dependences of the electrophoretic mobility on DNA length, the ef
fect of chirality of supercoiling on the mobility, and the formation o
f large aggregates of DNA in free-solution electrophoresis in capillar
ies.
