Barium- and lead- containing polyurethanes were synthesized. The chemi
cal bonding of metals was confirmed by IR spectroscopy. The effect of
metal ions on the microstructure of polymers was measured by different
ial scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. The stru
cture of ion-cured polymers was found to be determined not by the type
of metal-polymer bonding, but by the ability of metal ions to partici
pate in additional donor-acceptor interactions. For some systems the e
nergy of these interactions can exceed the energy of the metal-polymer
ionic bonds.
