Abstract
The Basu theory of the solvent effect on the absorption spectra of dye molecules in nonpolar solvent is reexamined. The term due to the tran sition dipole moment of a solute molecule was found to be irrelevant i n the formula of the spectral shift and only the term due to the elect ronic polarizability was necessary for the spectral shifts of large dy e molecules.
