A case of epithelioid sarcoma in a 39-year-old woman who had metastati
c lesions in her lung from a primary arm tumor is presented. A review
of the literature and analysis of this case did not identify any speci
fic light microscopic or immunohistochemical way to separate definitiv
ely the lung cytologic smear in this case from squamous cell carcinoma
. The authors believe cytologic smears from epithelioid sarcoma can cl
osely mimic smears from squamous cell carcinoma. Pathologists should b
e alert to these similarities.
