The behaviour of an yttria-stabilized zirconia electrode in the PbCl2-
KCl melt has been investigated at 475-degrees-C. The response of the e
lectrode is Nernstian and permits its use in the titration of Mg(II) w
ith oxide ions. We have observed that the PbCl2-KCl melt is more acidi
c than the LiCl-KCl eutectic melt and less than ZnCl2-2NaCl, as well a
s that that mixture can be purified by the removal of oxide ions with
gaseous reagents such as HCl and Cl2.
